LakePoint, Ga. – For the second time this season, USC Upstate senior pitcher Lexi Shubert has been honored by the ASUN Conference as its Softball Pitcher of the Week following her performance in conference play last week, the league announced this afternoon.
Shubert played a key role on the mound for Upstate as it went on the road and picked up a three-game sweep of Florida Gulf Coast. With the three wins, the Spartans have now moved into first place of the conference standings with a 6-3 record.
The Hickory, N.C. native did not allow a run over 14 innings of work during the three-game series and compiled two complete games. Shubert surrendered just five hits and four walks while striking out nine, and limited opponents to a .109 average at the plate. She also gave up no extra-base hits or home runs.
Shubert tossed two complete game shutouts against Florida Gulf Coast to lead Upstate to a 3-0 win in game one and a 5-0 victory in the finale. She began the weekend by giving up just two hits, two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings in game one. In the final game of the series, Shubert followed with another complete game shutout and allowed three hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts.
The senior has thrown 13 complete games this season to tie with Holly McKinnon for the team-lead and ranks tied for third in the conference. Shubert has not allowed a run in 15 of her appearances this season.
The Spartans travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Wednesday, April 12 for a 5 p.m. game against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
