Austin, Texas – USC Upstate sophomore forward Riley Popplewell has been named to the College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Thursday.

She is the first USC Upstate women’s basketball student-athlete to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team during the Division I era.

“Riley is an outstanding young woman,” head coach Tammy George said. “She is the true definition of a student-athlete. I am honored to have her in our program. She represents everything we are looking for in a student-athlete.”

Popplewell is an elementary education major with a 4.00 GPA. The Union Mills, Ind. native is one of five players to be named to the Academic All-District 4 Team, which consists of student-athletes from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. She is the only ASUN representative on the team and is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, which will consist of a first, second and third team to be announced on March 12.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. Candidates must also complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least a sophomore in the classroom.

In 27 games this season Popplewell is averaging 7.8 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. She tied her career-high of 17 points twice this season and grabbed a season-best 13 rebounds against Stetson on Feb. 12.

USC Upstate concludes the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday against NJIT at 1 p.m.
