USC Upstate Hosts Spartan Classic

The USC Upstate softball team returns to Cyrill Stadium this weekend as it is set to play host to four teams during the Spartan Classic scheduled from Friday until Sunday.

USC Upstate opens play on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. hosting the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Spartans follow with a doubleheader on Saturday against the Winthrop Eagles beginning at 1 p.m. The weekend concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader versus the Presbyterian College Blue Hose starting at 1 p.m.

USC Upstate extended its season-opening winning streak to nine games on Tuesday evening sweeping the Charlotte 49ers in a road doubleheader. In the opener, Christina Biggerstaff set a new career-high strikeout total for the second straight outing with 13 while only giving up one hit, extending her scoreless streak of earned runs allowed to 21.0 innings. Caylie Van Auken picked up her first collegiate win in game two while Karla Beasley hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

With her home run in game two, Beasley moves into a tie for third place all-time with current Spartan volunteer assistant coach Kendall Settlemyre at 34 career home runs.

Beasley leads the Spartans offensively with a .519 average, five home runs and 11 RBI this season. On the mound, Biggerstaff and Erin Hill are both 3-0 while Biggerstaff has a team-best 0.88 ERA.

Furman enters the weekend with an 8-3 overall record while Winthrop is 4-1, Marshall 4-5 and Presbyterian College 1-8.

The Spartans host Furman in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 28 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
