USC Upstate Softball Travels to Charlotte on Tuesday for Midweek Doubleheader

The USC Upstate softball team hits the road for the second time this season as the Spartans travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader against the Charlotte 49ers beginning at 2 p.m. from Phillips Softball Complex.

USC Upstate is currently on a seven-game winning streak to begin its season after winning five games last weekend in the Upstate Classic against Fairfield, Colgate and East Tennessee State. The Spartans posted a .383 team batting average and held opponents to eight runs. Logan Morris and Elisa Cecchetti both hit over .500 at the plate and led the team with six RBI apiece. Karla Beasley also hit two home runs. On the mound, Christina Biggerstaff did not allow a run in 13.0 innings of work.

Cecchetti was recognized for her performance on Monday being named the ASUN Player of the Week for the first time in her USC Upstate career.

The Spartans currently have the top offensive team in the ASUN ranking first in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. USC Upstate also ranks tied for fifth nationally in team batting average and sits in the top-10 for doubles per game, on-base percentage, scoring, slugging percentage and stolen bases per game.

Charlotte enters the midweek contests with a 5-2 record after picking up wins over Elon, Dayton, and UNC Wilmington. Haley Pace leads the 49ers on offense with a .474 batting average and five RBI while Taylar Byrne has hit one home run. On the mound, Haley Wiseman is 2-1 with a 3.25 ERA. Charlotte is under the direction of 21st-year head coach Aimee DeVos.

The Spartans and 49ers are meeting for the 20th and 21st times in program history with USC Upstate holding a 10-9 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1986 season. The Spartans defeated Charlotte 10-2 in five innings during the last meeting on April 22, 2015 in Spartanburg.
