Christina Biggerstaff Named ASUN Pitcher of the Week

LakePoint, Ga. – For the third consecutive week the USC Upstate softball team has received a weekly honor from the ASUN as Christina Biggerstaff was named the Pitcher of the Week this afternoon following her performance in the circle against Presbyterian College, Mount St. Mary’s and Indiana.

Biggerstaff, a junior transfer from Oklahoma State, made four starts last week and compiled a 4-0 record with a 0.56 ERA. She threw three complete games and added two shutouts as USC Upstate improved its winning streak to 18 straight games to start the season. Biggerstaff tossed 25.0 innings and gave up just two runs on 14 hits, four walks and 31 strikeouts, while limiting opponents to just a .161 batting average.

Biggerstaff began the week by throwing the fourth perfect game in school history after striking out 11 in five innings during a 9-0 win over Presbyterian College on Feb. 27.

She followed with a 3-0 record this past weekend at the Wings Etc. Classic against Mount St. Mary’s and Indiana. Biggerstaff tossed six innings in the opener versus Mount St. Mary’s and allowed just one run on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Biggerstaff then went the distance in two victories over Indiana surrendering only one run in 14 combined innings. She struck out a total of 13 batters against Indiana highlighted by nine in the finale on Sunday afternoon as the Spartans won 5-0.

Biggerstaff heads to the Wildcat Invitational this weekend in Tucson, Ariz. having allowed two runs or less in nine straight appearances and one or less in the last four.

She is the third USC Upstate softball player to earn weekly recognition from the ASUN this season. Elisa Cecchetti (Feb. 19) and Karla Beasley (Feb. 26) have both been named ASUN Player of the Week.
