Three Spartans Earn ASUN Postseason Awards

LakePoint, Ga. – USC Upstate student-athletes Riley Popplewell, A’Lexxus Davis and Anda Kuzmina were honored on Thursday as the ASUN Conference announced its postseason awards.

Popplewell was named the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year in addition to claiming a spot on the ASUN All-Academic Team. Popplewell, a sophomore Elementary Education major with a 4.00 GPA, was the only ASUN student-athlete to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team last week. She has played in 28 games and is averaging 7.6 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. She tied her career-high of 17 points twice this season. Popplewell is the first USC Upstate women’s basketball player to earn the award.

Davis was also named to the ASUN All-Academic Team. A senior Exercise Science major with a 3.77 GPA, she is on track to graduate in May. In 27 games, Davis leads the team with an average of 5.7 rebounds per game and has scored 5.9 points per game. Davis recorded a career-high 17 points against Brevard and NJIT in consecutive games while pulling down a career-best 16 rebounds against Lipscomb on Feb. 7.

Kuzmina was named to the All-Freshmen Team. The Riga, Latvia native has started 28 of 29 games and has finished in double figures in 14 games, including the first three of her career. Kuzmina scored a career-high 20 points against Brevard on Jan. 2. She was named the ASUN Freshman of the Week on Dec. 12.

USC Upstate earned the No. 5 seed in the ASUN Tournament and will face No. 4 Lipscomb tomorrow night at 8 p.m. EST.
