USC Upstate Hosts UNC Asheville Wednesday in Midweek Match

The USC Upstate men’s tennis team is back at home on Wednesday afternoon when the Spartans host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a non-conference match at 2 p.m. from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

USC Upstate is playing its first home match since February 18 when it hosted Queens and Campbell in a doubleheader. The Spartans split the doubleheader with a 5-2 win over Queens before falling 4-3 to Campbell.

USC Upstate returns to action after traveling to 23rd-ranked Tennessee on Feb. 24 and dropped a doubleheader against the Volunteers by scores of 7-0 and 4-0. In the doubleheader finale, the Spartans led in one doubles match as Luka Eble and Felix Ewers were up 4-3 at No. 3 but would go unfinished. Francisco Neto and Ankush Arora were tied in their No. 2 doubles match during the first contest but also went unfinished.

USC Upstate enters the match with a 2-9 overall record this season. Neto and Fernando Bernardes both lead the Spartans in singles competition with five wins as Bernardes plays primarily at No. 3 and Neto No. 2. In doubles play, the combinations of Bernardes and Igancio Garrido, and Eble and Ewers have each recorded three wins.

UNC Asheville is 3-6 this season with wins over Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill and UNC Greensboro. Olly Cull leads the Bulldogs in singles play with a 6-3 record, including three wins at No. 5, and has teamed up with Henry Patten to compile a 5-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. UNCA is led by fifth-year head coach Tom Hand.

USC Upstate leads the all-time series over UNC Asheville 2-1 and has won each of the last two matches. The Spartans defeated the Bulldogs in the last meeting, 4-3, on March 19, 2016 in Asheville.

USC Upstate remains at home on Monday, March 12 when it hosts Troy at 12 p.m.
