USC Upstate Nursing Chapter Earns Award From The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International

Dr. Lynette Gibson, associate professor of nursing at the Mary Black School Nursing at University of South Carolina Upstate, recently attended the 40th Biennial Convention of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) in Indianapolis, Indiana as a delegate. STTI is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide.

Gibson accepted the Chapter Key Award, the highest achievement that a chapter can receive, on behalf of the Mu Rho Chapter at USC Upstate. The Chapter Key Award, established in 1991, honors chapters who excel in chapter-related activities such as: membership recruitment and retention, publicity and programming, professional and leadership development, and local, national and international collaboration. The chapter was founded in 2002 and has 200 members.

Also attending the 40th Biennial Convention as a delegate was Scott Moore, a recent December graduate, was nominated from the floor for the Region 7 Coordinator, along with three other candidates. Moore won the election and as Region 7 Coordinator will represent South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Colombia, South America. Moore also won the 2009 – 2010 Mu Rho Chapter scholarship for academic excellence and leadership.

Founded in 1922, the STTI has inducted more than 400,000 members in 86 countries. Members include practicing nurses, instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and others. The honor society’s 469 chapters are located at 586 institutions of higher education throughout Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, the United States and Wales.
