When golfers take to the links for the University of South Carolina Upstate Alumni Association Golf Tournament, they will be helping to raise funds for much needed student scholarships. The tournament takes place on Thursday, May 20 at the Links O’Tryon.

“Scholarships funded by the USC Upstate Alumni Association have been a source of financial assistance to many outstanding students,” said Leah Anderson, director of alumni relations, annual giving and university events. “In fact, 95 students received scholarship support for the 2009-2010 academic year and more than 85% of USC Upstate students rely on some sort of financial assistance. With a record low 16% of funding coming from the state, community support for our scholarship programs is now more important than ever.”

Registration for the tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The entry fee is $75 per person or $300 for a team of four players. A Mulligan Pack can be purchased for $12 in advance or $15 at the event. USC Upstate Golf Coach Todd Lawton will conduct a golf clinic from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m. Lawton is a Professional Golf Association (PGA) Class A Professional, served as a PGA Head Professional from 1998-2002, founded the Charlotte Metro Junior Golf Association with his wife, Laura, in 2000, and served as a national member of the Ben Hogan Advisory Board and the ESPN National Golf Challenge Advisory Board. Awards and prizes will be given at the conclusion of the tournament.

Sponsors for this tournament include Academy Sports & Outdoors, Budweiser of Spartanburg, Chick-Fil-A (Westgate Mall), Fancy Terry Inc., Carolina Fresh Farms, Play It Again Sports, and Spartanburg Journal.
