Seventy-two students and three faculty members at the University of South Carolina Upstate were recently inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. (see full listing of inductees by hometown below).

“The purpose of Phi Kappa Phi is to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others,” said Dr. Carol Loar, assistant professor of history and president of Chapter 289 Phi Kappa Phi at USC Upstate. “That we have inducted 72 students this year speaks highly of the quality of our students and their dedication to academic success.”

In addition to Loar,  other board members for Chapter 289 include President-Elect and Publicity Laura B. Bannan, instructor of biology; Vice President David Coberly, assistant professor of Spanish; Treasurer Susan Hodge, senior director of community engagement; Secretary Karen Swetland, reference coordinator of the Library; and Scholarships & Awards Coordinator Chris Bender, associate professor of chemistry.

The organization inducts approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni annually from more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

Since its founding, more than 1 million members have been initiated into the ranks of Phi Kappa Phi. More than 120,000 members maintain their active status in Phi Kappa Phi, which affords numerous benefits associated with dues-paying membership, including access to more than $800,000 in annual awards and scholarships. Phi Kappa Phi has awarded more than $12.7 million since the inception of its awards program in 1932.
