Bolstered by 11 perfect 4.0 individual grade point averages, the USC Upstate Athletic teams posted a 3.006 average GPA in the spring semester, marking the second time in department history and the first time in the Division I era that the University’s student-athletes posted a 3.0 or better mark.

“We recognize just how difficult it is to balance the academic and athletic demands of our student-athletes and could not be more proud of how well our student-athletes continue to perform in the classroom,” said Mike Hall, Director of Athletics at Upstate. “We have seen improvement each year in how well our student-athletes perform in their role as students despite how hard they work representing the University in their respective sports. As a whole, our student-athletes are true ambassadors for the University and we take great pride in their accomplishments.”

Upstate once again had more than half of its student-athletes earn a 3.0 GPA or better in the spring academic report. Of the 203 student-athletes in the spring, 112 earned a 3.0 or better, representing 55 percent of the student-athlete population. Eleven student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, matching the same number from the fall semester.

The softball team led the department for the fourth straight semester, earning a 3.593 GPA for the spring. The team had nearly half of the department’s 11 4.0 GPAs with five selections as Kim Brasil, Monica Hall, Amber Hamilton, Keri Sarratt and Alex Yohe turned in perfect semesters. The softball team reached the accomplishment after winning a program Division I-best 41 games and reaching the championship game of the A-Sun Tournament.

Overall, nine of Upstate’s 15 athletic programs earned a GPA of 3.0 or better. The volleyball team was second in the department with a 3.295 GPA and was followed by men’s tennis (3.182) while it won the regular season A-Sun championship, women’s cross country (3.152), women’s golf (3.138), women’s basketball (3.113), women’s indoor/outdoor track & field (3.047), men’s soccer (3.045), women’s soccer (3.028), men’s basketball (2.915), men’s golf (2.828), men’s cross country (2.759), women’s tennis (2.650) and men’s indoor/outdoor track & field (2.572).

In addition to the five softball student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring, six other Spartan student-athletes achieved perfection in the spring. Hope Bennett (women’s indoor/outdoor track & field), Ben Brannan (men’s soccer), Johanna Ebenhag (women’s golf), Megan Healey (volleyball), Cheryl Lo (women’s golf) and Chalmers Rogers (men’s basketball) joined Brasil, Hall, Hamilton, Sarratt and Yohe on the 4.0 GPA list.

“Once again, our Spartan student-athletes shine in the classroom,” said Louise Ericson, Associate Athletics Director for Academics. “Boasting a 3.006 departmental GPA, over 200 student-athletes have excelled in their academic pursuits.  Balancing challenging academics along with the demands of Division I athletics is not an easy task and our student-athletes deserve recognition for all of their hard work.  They are improving athletically as well as academically and the University couldn’t be more proud.”
