USC Upstate To Hold Dedication for the Dr. Lawrence E. Roël Garden Pavilion

September 30, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Spartanburg, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Upstate will hold a dedication ceremony for the newly constructed Dr. Lawrence E. Roël Garden Pavilion on Monday, October 4, 2010 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Susan Jacobs Arboretum. The community is invited to attend this free event. After brief comments at 4:30 by Chancellor Stockwell, Dr. Roël, and biology professor Dr. Jack Turner, there will be light refreshments and wine served.

Spartanburg ophthalmologist Dr. Lawrence E. Roël provided the lead gift that enabled construction on the pavilion to begin in June 2010. Longtime supporters of the university, Dr. Roël and his family were excited to lend their support to this project which will bring students to the study of the natural sciences in a beautiful outdoor classroom adjacent to a meandering creek at the western end of the Susan Jacobs Arboretum.

USC Upstate students will use the pavilion to enjoy outdoor classes, and the entire campus community will be able to gather for activities such as picnics, campus events, and reunions.

The 1,000 square foot structure is constructed in rustic Shaker style, with cedar posts, tongue and groove wood ceiling, stacked stone walls, fireplace, and rustic beams and ceiling fans overhead. Open on three sides, with low stone walls bordering the edge, the pavilion will provide enough seating for up to 150 people. One handicapped accessible bathroom and a storage closet round out the list of amenities.

Although the Roël Pavilion will serve the campus as an outdoor classroom during the day, opportunities for its use extend far past traditional daytime events to dinners and intimate outdoor receptions. The stacked stone fireplace will warm the space and provide ambiance, as decorative copper hanging lanterns lend an inviting evening glow.

The Roël Pavilion and the 12-acre Susan Jacobs Arboretum are supported solely by private donations. As no state appropriated funds are used in these areas, opportunities to financially support the pavilion and the arboretum are available through the USC Upstate Foundation.
