Spartanburg, S.C. —  The Burroughs Child Development Center at the University of South Carolina Upstate announces its 35th year anniversary celebration and “graduation” on Thursday, April 28, 2011.

The celebration will be held at the Dr. Lawrence E. Roel Garden Pavilion in the Susan Jacobs Arboretum, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Events include the four-year olds’ graduation ceremony, a petting zoo, snow cones, face painting and a balloon release. Current university students, who are former Child Development Center students from years ago, have also been invited.

The Center opened in 1976, nine years after the founding of USC Upstate, as a day care center for children of university students, faculty and staff. The Center has also been utilized for research and teaching, as students from the School of Education, the Mary Black School of Nursing, and the Psychology Department have gained valuable observation lab and classroom experience at the Center. Teaching Fellows program participants also obtain hands-on experience.

The staff is comprised of four lead teachers, three teacher assistants and one part-time teacher assistant. All Center teachers are certified in Early Childhood Education, and two hold Master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education. The staff plans and implements developmentally appropriate curriculum consisting of hands-on activities and a learning-rich environment that allows children to develop at their own pace. The Center is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Social Services and is a member of the South Carolina Advocates for Better Care Programs. The Center is accredited by The National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation’s largest and most widely recognized accreditation system for early childhood schools and child care centers.
