On Saturday, April 30, 2011, the USC Upstate Commercial Music Group, under the direction of Dr. Doug Scarborough, participated in the Mac Arnold and the Plate Full of Blues 5th Cornbread & Collard Greens Blues Festival. These Upstate student musicians opened for Mac Arnold at the Handlebar in Greenville, SC.  Mac Arnold invited them back onto the stage for a closing jam session that also featured Dr. Scarborough alternately on the keyboard and the trombone, together with Dr. Dirk Schlingmann, dean of  USC Upstate’s College of Arts and Sciences on the fiddle. Together, they brought the audience to its feet.

The participation of the USC Upstate contingent was made possible by the following:  the generosity of Mr. Mac Arnold who invited the USC Upstate group, the enthusiastic support of Dean Schlingmann, a mathematician by formal training, and a musician since childhood (he also plays the guitar) who brought Mac Arnold and Doug Scarborough together, as well as the behind the scenes work of a few friends who connected these dots in the first place. Mac Arnold’s personal photographer and USC Upstate alum, Brian Kelley, provided these pictures.
