The University of South Carolina Upstate and the University of Applied Sciences Landshut in Landshut, Germany have signed a consortium agreement establishing a dual degree program between the colleges of business and economics at both institutions.

Dr. Karl Stoffel, president, and Dr. Alexander Kumpf, dean of international business studies, traveled from Landshut, Germany to Spartanburg to sign the mutual agreement. USC Upstate’s chancellor, Dr. Thomas Moore, and the dean of the George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics, Dr. Darrell Parker, signed the agreement on behalf of USC Upstate.

USC Upstate’s Center for International Studies facilitated the exchange agreement. Dr. Deryle Hope, the center’s associate director, is very enthusiastic about what the program could potentially mean for both universities.

“The Landshut program provides opportunities for German students from that university to come to USC Upstate and work towards completion of a second bachelor of science degree, after having completed requirements for their degree in Germany,” says Hope.

“It also allows for USC Upstate business students to complete a second bachelor of science degree in business at the German university once they have completed a year of study there. Both groups of students can be involved in internships with multinational companies in order to gain some valuable work experience, while they are pursuing their academic program,” he adds.

Hope anticipates a fall 2012 start for the program, with students coming and going from both sides of the Atlantic.

“We are striving to increase the international offerings at our university as well as the international exchange of students. The new co-operation is an important step in this direction,” stated Landshut University President Stoffel during the signature ceremony held March 15, 2012.
