Hope tapped to lead International Studies Program at USC Upstate

Dr. Deryle Hope was recently promoted to director of the Center for International Studies at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Known for its international orientation, USC Upstate has ties with more than 80 countries and agreements with 24 partner foreign universities.

“Dr. Deryle Hope will do a stellar job leading the international studies program at USC Upstate,” said Dr. Charles Harrington, senior vice chancellor for academics. “He has been at the recent forefront of establishing new agreements with foreign universities.”

In his new role, Hope will be responsible for the university’s enrollment of international students, curricular focus on international education and awareness, and the myriad organizations and outreach programs that serve the Upstate international community.

Hope came to USC Upstate in 2007 as associate director of international studies. In addition, Hope assisted with numerous initiatives in support of graduate program development and student recruitment, continuing education, and pre-college academic programs, undergraduate research, grant writing and other initiatives in support of the university’s campus and outreach missions.

Hope earned a bachelor’s degree in French/Spanish, a master’s degree in international business, and a doctorate of education in curriculum and instruction from theUniversityofSouth Carolina.  During the seven years prior to 2007, he worked in administrative positions in Spartanburg School District Two. Hope worked at USC Upstate in 1999-2000 as Spanish, French, Portuguese instructor. He obtained an Eisenhower grant to develop a year-long intensive, refresher foreign language program to improve the linguistic skills of secondary school teachers in French, Spanish, and German. Prior to that, Hope worked as a Spanish, French, German teacher and chaired the foreign language department atBoilingSpringsHigh School.

His international business experience includes working with two multinational corporations — Unisys Corp. and Bendix Corp.  For more than eight years, Hope was on extensive international financial assignments inBrazil,Argentina,Mexico,Venezuelaand several other Latin American countries.
