Spartans Continue Road Swing Wednesday at Memphis

The USC Upstate men’s basketball team continues a four-game road trip Wednesday at 8 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Memphis from the FedEx Forum.

Upstate, now ranked No. 22 in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll, has won three of its last four games despite falling at No. 17 Maryland on Saturday. Fred Miller scored a team-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists and two steals on his way earning Atlantic Sun Player of the Week accolades. It’s the second straight week a Spartan has earned the distinction, as Ty Greene received the award Dec. 8 after leading Upstate to a win at Georgia Tech.

Greene and Miller continue to serve as the offensive catalysts for an Upstate offense that ranks second in the conference with 72.8 points per game. Individually, Greene ranks second in the league with 15.9 points per game, while Miller stands fifth with 13.3 per game.

In addition to their offensive contributions, Greene and Miller have proven to be two of the top defenders in the league as well. In fact, Greene leads the A-Sun with 2.2 steals per game and Miller ranks third with 1.9 per game. Overall, Upstate is first in the conference and fifth in the nation with 10.5 steals per game.

Greene and Miller have led an Upstate defense that ranks first in the A-Sun and 20th in the nation by holding opponents to 56.3 points per game. Additionally, the Spartans stand second in the league and 24th in the NCAA in three-point field goal percentage defense by limiting opponents to just 27.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Memphis posted an 81-47 victory over North Carolina Central Monday night to improve to 4-4 overall and 3-2 at home.

Junior forward Shaq Goodwin leads Memphis with 10.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Austin Nichols is second on the team with 10.8 points per game and Trahson Burrell also scores in double figures with 10. 0 points per game.


USC Upstate and Memphis will meet for the first time when the two square off Wednesday.
