Upstate’s Robinson Selected by Akron Racers in NPF Draft

Minutes after belting a two-run home run to tie the game against Presbyterian at 3-3 in the sixth inning, USC Upstate All-American softball player Shellie Robinson was selected by the Akron Racers with the 23rd pick of the 2015 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Draft Wednesday evening. She is the third Spartan drafted into the NPF in the last four years.

“It was very exciting to hear when it was announced over the PA. My teammates picked me up, they were shouting. It was an awesome moment and very surreal. Just a great moment,” said Robinson. “The hard work has paid off that we have put in over the last three and a half years. It is very exciting for the program to get the third player drafted in the history of the program.”

The NPF Draft took place at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tenn. Robinson was selected by the Akron Racers, who also selected all-time Spartan pitching great Morgan Childers in 2011. Last year, pitcher Anna Miller was drafted by the PA Rebellion. Robinson becomes the first position player from Upstate ever drafted in the NPF. The NPF is a five-team league with the Akron Racers, Chicago Bandits, Dallas Charge, PA Rebellion and USSSA Pride forming the league. Dallas is in its first season as a new team in the league.

Robinson has had an epic career at Upstate. Arguably the top offensive player in the history of the program, she owns two all-time career records and two all-time season records at Upstate and is the program’s top offensive player since Upstate moved to Division I for the 2008 season. She owns nearly every major offensive record including hits, home runs, doubles, runs, RBIs and is in position for the records in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

Robinson is a highly decorated player. She was the 2014 A-Sun Player of the Year and is the 2015 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year selection. She became the first Upstate student-athlete to earn All-America honors on the Division I level when she earned third team All-America honors in 2014. She is a three-time NFCA All-Region selection and has earned A-Sun First Team All-Conference honors as well.

“Shellie is the most complete player we have ever had in the program,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “She hits with power, she hits for average, she has tremendous speed and is a very good outfielder. She does it all and she does it the right way. She has developed as a player and a person since she has come to Upstate and I could not be more proud of her. She deserves everything good thing that comes her way. She has worked hard to get where she is. I look forward to watching her in the pro league, but I am even more excited to see what she has in store for the rest of the season as she helps lead the team in reaching the goals we have set for ourselves.”
