The USC Upstate women’s soccer team looks to continue its winning ways Friday at 5 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Alabama State to County University Soccer Stadium. Upstate also travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., Sunday at 2 p.m. to face Gardner-Webb in the first road match of the season.

The Spartans enter the weekend coming off a 5-0 victory over The Citadel in which Upstate turned in its largest margin of victory since 2011. Senior Haley Gethin scored three goals and became only the fourth Spartan in school history to notch a hat trick.

“We came out determined to be more aggressive and put together a strong offensive attack,” Gethin said Sunday after the win. “My goal is to always help the team win in any way I can.”

Senior Alexa Hone and freshman Kate Winegarner each registered their first career goal Sunday against the Bulldogs.

“Sunday’s game against The Citadel amplified our confidence and strength as a team,” Spartan senior Shauna Kain said. “We are excited to build off of last week and ride some of that momentum into another successful slate of games this weekend.”

Alabama State is 0-2-0 thus far this season following home losses to Georgia State and Troy. Upstate has enjoyed a great deal of success in the all-time series with Alabama State. In fact, Upstate is 3-0 against the Hornets and has outscored Alabama State 17-1 in the series that began in 2007. The Hornets, however, secured their first win over Upstate last season following a 1-0 victory.

Gardner-Webb fell to 0-2-0 overall after dropping a 2-1 decision Sunday at Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 2-0 loss at Troy. Gardner-Webb defeated Upstate 1-0 last season and is 8-1-0 in the all-time series that began in 2000.

“This weekend is an opportunity for us to continue to improve our skill on both sides of the ball,” Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. “I’m also interested to see how we serve each other on the pitch and from the sideline. We are facing two solid opponents, so I expect the game to be very competitive.”
