Upstate Welcomes 32 Teams this Weekend for the Upstate Invitational

The USC Upstate cross country team hosts 32 schools as part of the Upstate Invitational Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m. from Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg.

The event is made up of two races beginning at 9 a.m. with the women’s 5K followed by the men’s 8K race at 9:45 a.m. An awards ceremony will take place following the completion of the men’s race. Complete results will be made available on after the conclusion of the final race.

The Upstate Invitational field will consist of 32 schools, roughly 600 runners, including seven that are ranked in the latest NCAA Division I Regional Rankings, and one on the Division II level, by the U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The seven Division I schools ranked are Appalachian State (men, women), Coastal Carolina (women), Florida Gulf Coast (women), Georgia Tech (men, women), High Point (men), Liberty (men) and Virginia Tech (men). On the Division II side, UNC Pembroke is ranked regionally for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Along with Upstate and the eight ranked schools, the other teams competing on Saturday are:  Campbell, Charleston Southern, UT-Chattanooga, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Columbia International, Converse (women), Erskine, Gardner-Webb, King (women), Limestone, Lynchburg, Mercer, Milligan, Newberry, Presbyterian College, Radford, UNC Wilmington, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Wofford.

The Spartans hosted the Upstate Invitational last season as the men finished tied for seventh place and the women produced an eighth place performance. Griffin Eubanks led the Upstate men with a 19th place finish while former Spartan Jasmine Polite had the top finish for the women in 25th place.

Upstate is back in action for the first time since Sept. 19 at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational where the men placed second and the women fourth. Eubanks logged his sixth career top-10 finish after crossing the finish line in 10th place. Anastasia Kolesnitchenko posted the top individual performance for the Spartan women as the senior finished in 37th place.

The Spartans are off next weekend before traveling to Johns Island, S.C. on Oct. 16 for the College of Charleston Classic.
