The USC Upstate softball team continues to garner votes in two national Division I polls heading into the seventh week of the 2016 season, it was announced earlier this week by both publications.

Upstate received 21 votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll and 16 in the Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll. The Spartans are within striking distance of being ranked in both polls, sitting 27th in the USA Today/NFCA Poll and 28th in the Softball Poll.

Upstate is the top-ranked A-Sun team in the NCAA RPI. The Spartans, ranked 50th in the first RPI of the season, are 37 positions ahead of Jacksonville at No. 87. The Dolphins are followed by Lipscomb (90), Kennesaw State (102) and Stetson (116). The A-Sun boasts three of its seven teams in the Top 100 and five in the Top 120.

In addition to the two A-Sun opponents ranked in the Top 100, Upstate has played or will play nine non-conference opponents ranked in the Top 100 in this week’s ranking, including No. 18 South Florida, No. 23 South Carolina, No. 32 Virginia Tech, No. 33 Ohio State, No. 49 Kent State, No. 63 North Carolina, No. 69 New Mexico State, No. 72 N.C. State and No. 76 Western Carolina.

The Spartans are 4-1 over their last five games after sweeping East Tennessee State at home in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Upstate opened A-Sun play last weekend by taking two out of three on the road from conference preseason favorite Lipscomb. Entering the weekend, the Spartans are 27-4 overall and 2-1 in A-Sun play.

Upstate remains at home this weekend as it hosts Florida Gulf Coast in a three-game conference series beginning Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
