Upstate Remains at Home Tuesday to Host Presbyterian College

The USC Upstate men’s basketball team will play its second home game in four days on Tuesday evening as the Spartans welcome the Presbyterian College Blue Hose to the Hodge Center for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.

Upstate returned home after a season-long seven-game road trip last Saturday and defeated UVa.-Wise 99-67 as four players finished in double-figures scoring. Malik Moore led the Spartans offensively with a career-high 28 points, and Michael Buchanan recorded his fifth double-double of the season on 17 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Cunningham added 15 points and Josh Cuthbertson 14.

Upstate finished the game shooting a season-best 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the field and is the second time this season that the Spartans have posted a shooting percentage of 50.0 percent or better. Upstate also held a 38-28 advantage over UVa.-Wise in points in the paint, 17-8 in points off turnovers, 10-6 in second chance points and 6-2 in fast break points.

Buchanan currently leads three Spartans in scoring this season with 15.3 points per game while adding a team-leading 10.5 rebounds per contest. Along with Buchanan, Cunningham contributes 14.0 points per game and Deion Holmes 13.2. Cuthbertson dishes out a team-high 4.3 assists per game and Philip Whittington has 17 total blocks.

Presbyterian College has earned wins this season over Furman, VMI and Johnson & Wales, and is coming off a 90-50 loss at Tennessee on Dec. 6. Jo’Vontae Millner leads the Blue Hose this season with 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Presbyterian College is under the direction of 28th-year head coach Gregg Nibert.

Upstate is facing the Blue Hose for the 26th time in program history with Presbyterian College holding a 13-12 lead in the all-time series. The Blue Hose defeated the Spartans 74-73 last season in Clinton, S.C. Upstate holds a 6-4 advantage when playing in Spartanburg.
