Upstate Hosts Kennesaw State on Monday in ASUN Men’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinal

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men’s basketball team begins it journey for an NCAA Tournament bid on Monday evening when the fourth-seeded Spartans host No. 5 seed Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Men’s Basketball Championship from the G.B. Hodge Center.

Upstate finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference standings, but earned the fourth seed in this week’s tournament due to the league’s tiebreaker. The Spartans currently hold a 17-14 overall record and 7-7 mark in the ASUN.

Upstate had two players receive postseason recognition from the conference this weekend as Michael Buchanan was named First Team All-Conference while Jure Span earned a spot on the All-Academic Team. Buchanan is the third player in school history to be selected ASUN First Team All-Conference while Span is also the third Spartan to be voted to the All-Academic Team.

Upstate closed out its regular season last Thursday with an 88-87 road loss at NJIT. Buchanan led all players with a game-high 27 points, while Mike Cunningham added 16 and Philip Whittington 10. The Spartans finished the game shooting 54.8 percent from the field, tying their season-high, and led 13-7 in points off turnovers.

Kennesaw State heads into postseason play with a 13-17 record on the season and was 7-7 in conference play, finishing tied for fourth in the league standings with Upstate. Kendrick Ray leads the Owls offensively with 20.9 points per game while Aubrey Williams pulls down a team-leading 11.0 rebounds per contest. Kennesaw State is under the direction of second-year head coach Al Skinner.

The Spartans and Owls are meeting for the 27th time in program history with Upstate holding a 23-13 lead in the all-time series. The teams split the regular season series with the Spartans picking up a 79-73 victory in Spartanburg while Kennesaw State won 84-79 in Kennesaw. Upstate holds a 15-4 advantage when playing in Spartanburg.
