Upstate Places 158 Student-Athletes on 2016-17 ASUN Academic Honor Roll

Led by 12 student-athletes who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year, USC Upstate placed 158 student-athletes on the ASUN Academic Honor Roll to highlight the department’s academic accomplishments during the 2016-17 academic year, the conference announced today.

Upstate’s 158 Academic Honor Roll selections mark the fourth time in ten years in the ASUN that the Spartans have topped 140 honorees. In total, Upstate placed 64.23 percent of its student-athletes on the team. A student-athlete earns ASUN Academic Honor Roll recognition for achieving a 3.0 GPA or better for the academic year.

“I am very proud of our student-athletes for their commitment to their academic work and I congratulate them on their success,” said Athletic Director Lee Fowler. “The time and physical demands placed on student-athletes within their respective sports are tough and being able to balance their commitment to academics and athletics is not easy. As a group, our student-athletes have proven to not only be able to handle the pressure, but to excel in doing so. I could not be more proud of their efforts and dedication in receiving a quality education and moving toward receiving their degrees.”

Upstate had 12 student-athletes, tied for third-best in the ASUN, achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA for 2016-17. The Spartans with a perfect 4.0 GPA were Shane Burke (men’s soccer), Lenhard Haupt (men’s tennis), Kevin Hickey (baseball), Logan Hill (softball), Theodore Kountourogiannis (men’s cross country/track), Riley Popplewell (women’s basketball), Ryan Rector (softball), Lexi Shubert (softball), Carol Sigaki (women’s tennis), Lukas Sommer (men’s soccer), Tarynn Tirpak (softball) and Vale Zarama (women’s tennis).

In total, 1,430 ASUN Conference student-athletes registered at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2016-17 academic year with 119 earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. One hundred and seventy three league student-athletes graduated with ASUN Honors by having a cumulative 3.5 GPA or above upon graduation. Upstate had 11 student-athletes graduate with ASUN Honors including Rachel Baylor (women’s soccer), Griffin Eubanks (track & field), Raven Jefferson (women’s basketball), Kyle Juell (men’s soccer), Emily Koelling (volleyball), Theodore Kountourogiannis (men’s cross country/track), Alejandro Lopez (men’s golf), Abbie Millete (softball), Sam Moss (men’s soccer), Ryan Rector (softball) and Lexi Shubert (softball).
