Spartans Host Three Teams in Upstate Classic this Weekend

The USC Upstate softball team begins the home portion of its 2018 season this weekend when it hosts the Fairfield Stags, Colgate Raiders and East Tennessee State Buccaneers in the Upstate Classic from Cyrill Stadium.

Overall, USC Upstate will play five games this weekend. The Spartans open tournament play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Fairfield beginning at 1 p.m. USC Upstate follows with another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Colgate before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a single game versus East Tennessee State.

The Spartans started their season on Feb. 8 by sweeping a road doubleheader at Gardner-Webb with scores of 8-4 and 15-1 in five innings. In the opener, Kelsey Sweatt made her first collegiate appearance on the mound and picked up the win in relief throwing four innings and struck out three. Megan Obier had a career-high five RBI in game two while Kristen Wright set new career-bests of three hits and three runs scored. Karla Beasley also tied her career-high of three hits and collected four RBI to go with two home runs.

East Tennessee State enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record after picking up wins last weekend over Murray State and Georgia Southern at the Eagle Round Robin. Fairfield and Colgate are both beginning their respective seasons this weekend.

USC Upstate leads the all-time series over East Tennessee State 16-4, and 1-0 against both Fairfield and Colgate.

The Spartans travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for a doubleheader against the 49ers beginning at 2 p.m.
