USC Upstate Begins Road Trip Tuesday at Gardner-Webb

The USC Upstate men’s tennis team starts its four-match road trip on Tuesday afternoon when it makes the short trip to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a 2:30 p.m. match against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at GWU Tennis Courts.

USC Upstate enters the match with a 1-2 record on the season after falling at home to Presbyterian College 4-3 last Thursday. The Spartans won the doubles point against the Blue Hose after victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Felix Ewers and Fernando Bernardes captured their respective singles matches with Ewers playing at No. 1 and Bernardes No. 6.

Francisco Neto leads USC Upstate in singles play this season with a 2-1 overall record while Ewers and Luka Eble are 2-0 in doubles competition.

Gardner-Webb is 1-4 this season after picking up a 4-3 victory at Davidson on Jan. 25. Maximillan Scholl leads the Runnin’ Bulldogs with a 4-0 singles record at the No. 1 position. In doubles play, the combinations of Scholl and Breno Plentz and Adam Schmidt and Millen Hurrion have won two matches each. GWU is the under the direction of 15th-year head coach Mike Griffith.

The Spartans and Runnin’ Bulldogs met last season in Spartanburg with USC Upstate winning the match 5-2.

The Spartans continue their road trip next weekend, Feb. 10-11, against Liberty and UNC Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C.
