USC Upstate Returns to Hodge Center this Week to Host Stetson, FGCU

The USC Upstate men’s basketball team is back at the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena in the G.B. Hodge Center this week to celebrate the university’s Homecoming as it hosts the Stetson Hatters and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a pair of ASUN Conference matchups.

USC Upstate begins its week on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. game against Stetson before hosting Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Spartans traveled to Kennesaw State last Saturday and dropped a 93-69 decision to the Owls. Mike Cunningham led USC Upstate offensively with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while Ramel Thompkins added 16 and Deion Holmes 12. Avery Diggs led the Spartans on defense with a career-high nine rebounds and Pat Welch also came off the bench to score a career-best nine points. USC Upstate held a 21-15 advantage in second chance points.

Stetson currently sits at 10-16 on the season and 2-7 in ASUN play with wins against the Spartans and NJIT. The Hatters are led offensively by Divine Myles with 16.9 points per game while Abayomi Iyiola is averaging a team-best 6.1 rebounds per contest. Stetson is under the direction of fifth-year head coach Corey Williams.

Florida Gulf Coast is 18-8 overall and unbeaten in the conference at 9-0. Brandon Goodwin leads the Eagles both offensively and defensively averaging 17.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Michael Gilmore is tied with Goodwin for the team-lead in rebounding at 5.7 per contest. FGCU is led by fifth-year head coach Joe Dooley.

The Spartans are tied with the Hatters in the all-time series 10-10 but trail the Eagles 16-6.
