Cultural events and opportunities abound for public enjoyment during the summer at Chapman Cultural Center. New exhibitions, performances, and public events in the performing and visual arts, history, and science are planned for June, July, and August in summer 2015.

Spartanburg Music History | through Nov. 1

Spartanburg County Historical Association (SCHA) is taking a long look back at local music through November 1 with its current exhibition Spartanburg Music History. Learn about Spartanburg’s role in producing nationally acclaimed musicians, historic venues, and more. This display is located in Spartanburg Regional History Museum’s rotating exhibition space at Chapman Cultural Center. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Free. Furnace and Flame exhibition | through July 5

Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) is showcasing 50 years worth of contemporary glass art by an array of talented artists through July 5 at Chapman Cultural Center. The exhibition, Furnace and Flame, offers viewers opportunities to engage with one of the world’s most contemporary, fragile, and diverse art forms. Artists Kate Vogel and John Littleton curated the exhibition and have their works featured alongside works by Dean Allison, Rick Beck, Alex Bernstein, Kate Bernstein, William Bernstein, Jennifer Bueno, Thor Bueno, David Chatt, Shane Fero, Robert Gardner, Robert Levin, and Harvey Littleton. The Kaplan Collection exhibition | through July 5

Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) features nearly 150 vintage perfume bottles in its current exhibition The Kaplan Collection at Chapman Cultural Center. The bottles are part of Jay and Pamela Kaplan’s collection made from important American glass houses such as Steuben, Cambridge, Frye, and Imperial. Most bottles were manufactured between 1924 and 1929, when Art Deco was the signature style in decorative arts throughout America and Europe. Student Galleries exhibition | through July 4

The Student Galleries at Chapman Cultural Center showcase the best of student artwork from across Spartanburg County as part of its award-winning arts education program. Artists’ Guild exhibition: Anthony & Dice | June 1-27

Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg presents the works of local artists each month in its gallery at Chapman Cultural Center. Summer in the ’60s: Part I | June 3

Spartanburg County Historical Association (SCHA) presents Summer in the ’60s, a three-part series highlighting major American events throughout the 1960s using music of the decade as a historical marker, at the Spartanburg County Public Library Headquarters in downtown Spartanburg. Jack Fisher, an American Bandstand Dancer and ’60s Rock & Roll disc jockey, will host this trip down memory lane as participants relive one of the most influential decades in history. Topics from the 1960s will include the unpopular Vietnam War, assassinations of major American figures, the escalating Cold War, the feminist movement, riots in major cities, a burgeoning drug culture, and the first lunar landing. Fisher’s talks will demonstrate how the music of the decade both reflected and affected major events. Admission is $10 per lecture or $25 for all three. Voices on the Front Porch | June 3, 10

Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) is hosting a series of free, public, live concerts — Voices on the Front Porch — at Harvest Park in Spartanburg on Wednesdays in May and June, 4-5:30 p.m. These event showcase multiple artistic crafts and the contribution they make to understanding and appreciating local artistic talents. Chapman Cultural Center presents Sundays Unplugged, where the public is invited to visit the Center and enjoy local culture at a leisurely pace, each Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Spartanburg Art Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg Gallery, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, and the Student Galleries are all open with free admission. Spartanburg Science Center is also open with a small admission fee. Weather permitting, local artists sell their work directly to the public in the plaza. Join SCHA and the South Carolina Independent Rangers to celebrate the region’s role in America’s war for independence, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with reenactments, stories, and more. Spartanburg County Historical Association (SCHA) will host the June installment of its monthly Lunch & Learn lecture series on Friday, June 26, 12:30-1:30 p.m., at Chapman Cultural Center. The topic will be Camp Wadsworth, a military training camp during World War I. The site saw the training of 100,000 soldiers during its operation, 1917-1919. The Spartanburg Little Theatre (SLT) will have Spartanburg doing the “Time Warp” during its first summer Fringe Series production at Chapman Cultural Center: The Rocky Horror Show. When clean-cut Brad and naïve Janet get stranded on the side of the road and seek help from the Frankenstein place, they get more than they bargained for. With unintentional humor of B-movies and portentous dialogue of schlock horror, this rock musical masterpiece will have you giving over to absolute pleasure. This show is not a part of the SLT subscription series. Patrons are encouraged to dress up at the midnight shows to compete in a costume contest. Showtimes are July 24, 25, 30, and 31 at 8 p.m.; Aug. 1 at 8 p.m.; and July 25 and 31 at midnight. Tickets are $25 per adult, $24 per senior, and $17 per student. Hub City Empty Bowls will hold two bowl-making sessions in August: Thursday, Aug. 20, at West Main Artists Co-Op, 6-8:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 22, at Chapman Cultural Center, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. The public is invited to make handmade pottery bowls at no charge that will be used to raise money to feed local hungry citizens. Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) will host a benefit concert for The Music Foundation of Spartanburg on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. in Chapman Cultural Center’s theater. The 3rd Annual World Masterwork Series — A Rare Two-Piano Fantasy: A Night at the Opera – will be performed by concert pianists Dr. John Cobb and Christopher Tavernier, playing music by Franz Liszt. News anchor Michael Cogdill will be the emcee, and Chapman Cultural Center President Jennifer Evins will be the keynote speaker. On tap are two of the most spectacular two-piano compositions ever written: Reminiscences of Don Juan from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Reminiscences of Norma by Bellini.
