Student Life Sponsors Martin Luther King, Jr., Essay Contest

MLKEssayContest_savethedateIn honor of Dr. King’s birthday, the University Of South Carolina Upstate Office Of Student Life is sponsoring an essay contest to commemorate the “I Have a Dream” speech.
On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his prolific vision in what would become one of many defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement. In this speech, Dr. King addressed racial inequality, social justice, and unity in a powerful appeal to end racial discrimination in the United States. Essay Topic:
As we progress into the year 2015, write your own modern day “I Have a Dream” speech that describes your vision of how we can progress as a unified society. All entries must demonstrate a clear understanding of Dr. King’s impact on the nation and his perception of peace.

Eligibility:
-Applicants must be USC Upstate students
-Limit one submission per student
-Only individual submissions are permitted

Prizes:
-1st place: $200
-2nd place: $150
-3rd place: $100

*All winners will be announced at an upcoming diversity speech on Thursday, February 5th.

Essay Guidelines
-Essay should be 500 words or less and double spaced using a 12 point font
-All entries require a cover sheet
-To ensure blind judging, applicants should place their name, phone number, and e-mail address on a cover page; none of the writer’s information should not appear on any pages of the essay.
-Essays should be forwarded as a Microsoft Word document with the attached cover sheet to stulife@uscupstate.edu with the email subject: MLK Essay Contest 2015 by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.
