World Languages Institute to Offer Instruction in Chinese

The University of South Carolina Upstate’s World Languages Institute will offer instruction in Chinese this spring in two non-credit courses. Classes begin the week of Feb. 12 and run through the week of March 15, meeting twice per week on the USC Upstate campus. No foreign language experience is required to register but each course is limited to 12 participants on a first-come-first served basis.

Chinese Language for Business will be offered on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The cost for the 10-session course is $450, which includes the textbook. Chinese Language for Beginners will be offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10-11 a.m. The cost for the 10-session course is $250, which does not include textbook or study materials. Dr. Guimei Li, an associate research fellow and Chinese language instructor the Beijing Language and Culture University, is a visiting professor of Chinese language and culture at USC Upstate. She will teach both courses.

Li earned her Ph.D. in linguistics and applied linguistics from the Beijing Language and Culture University and is a fellow with the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Li, who brings more than 15 years of teaching and research experience in Chinese language and culture, has taught Chinese language in Thailand and served as a visiting scholar at the University of California Davis.
